  • Assam bagged a special award – for its standout performance in the North East region – in the recently-concluded Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2018 conducted throughout the country by the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen. 
  • A piano ensemble charity event in China has created a new Guinness World Record. A total of 666 pianos were played simultaneously by 639 participants in Wuqiang county of Hebei province on Saturday, setting a new world record. Pianists from eight countries and regions joined blind children, as well as teachers, students and music enthusiasts from around China.
  • Sikkim became the latest addition to the country’s aviation map on Thursday as SpiceJet operated the first direct commercial flight to the Pakyong airport from Kolkata.
  • State Education and Guwahati Development Department Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya ceremonially distributed Ayushman Bharat cards among the beneficiaries at the East Guwahati State Dispensary, Chandmari. The Ayushman Bharat programme aims to make healthcare accessible and affordable, by providing coverage of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 crore to the economically backward families. Nearly 31 States and Union Territories are implementing the programme to enable 50 crore Indians to reap the benefits of the scheme.
  • Padma Shri award winning Gandhian Natwar Thakkar, also known as Nagaland’s Gandhi, passed away at a private hospital here this morning. He was 86.
  • Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege and Yazidi campaigner Nadia Murad won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for their work in fighting sexual violence in conflicts around the world.
  • The State-run Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APL), Namrup has launched Asia’s first canister-based green and clean fuel pilot project of ‘Methanol Cooking Stove’
  • Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev will be attending the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled to be held in New York.
  • India and Russia today concluded a deal for supply of S-400 Triumf long-range surface-to-air missile system giving a substantial boost to air defence capabilities of the Indian Air Force.
  • Musician-cum-activist Kishour Giri, known for his inimitable style of raising issues concerning Assam, passed away this morning. Giri (63) died at his Kharguli residence
  • NPS International School was awarded by UNESCO MGIEP as a part of the International Youth Campaign on Kindness for the Sustainable Development Goals. UNESCO awarded the students with equipments worth more than Rs 1 lakh for creating 360ยบ media. The organisations which have collaboratively awarded NPS are UNESCO, Facebook–Oculus, Digital Promise and UN SDG Action Campaign. NPS students made a 4-minute film using 360 degree equipments based on the award-winning project which was done by them in 2016 – ‘Save the Turtles of Assam’. NPS students have been closely working on the 17 SDGs since the last few years and this award from UNESCO is a plume in their beret.
