  • Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today launched the e-office of the State Government at his office chamber. The objective of the e-office is to usher in more efficient, effective and transparent inter-government and intra-government transactions as movement of files will be digital.
  • Aaranyak, an environmental NGO and scientific and industrial research organisation, signed an MoU with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) on Tuesday for facilitating coordination between the Centre for Rural Technology IITG
  • Consensual gay sex is not a crime, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday, striking down a British era law that it said violates the right to equality and triggering celebrations among LGBTQ activists who welcomed it as a harbinger of a more inclusive India. Parts of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalised consensual unnatural sex, are “irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary”, the apex court said in its historic ruling that made India the 26th country in the world where homosexuality is legal. “History owes an apology to members of the community for the delay in ensuring their rights,” for denying them their rights and compelling them to live a life of fear, said Justice Indu Malhotra, who was part of the five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra that delivered the judgement, capping a 17-year legal struggle. In its 493-page judgement, the bench said aspects of Section 377 dealing with unnatural sex with animals and children remain in force.
  • A long-negotiated defence pact Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement (COMCASA)’ agreement, under which critical and encrypted defence technologies will be provided to the Indian military by the US was inked on 6th September 2018 after the two countries held their first 2+2 dialogue during which they also discussed key issues, including cross-border terrorism, India’s NSG bid and the contentious H1B visa issue. The two countries also decided to set up hotlines between them.
  • Eminent sculptor and artist Biren Singha was today felicitated by the Karmashree Hiteswar Saikia College. Singha was felicitated with a gamosa, eri sadar, cash and a panegyric recitation by Dr Sikhamoni Konwar, Principal of the college and Dr Amburam Gogoi, president of the college governing body.

    ISSF World Championship

    • Saurabh Chaudhary claimed a record-shattering gold in the junior 10m air pistol event but Abhishek Verma missed out on an Olympic quota after finishing eighth in the senior competition of the ISSF World Championship. Chaudhary first set a world record in the 10m air pistol event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in June. 
    • Arjun Singh Cheema settled for a bronze in Chaudhary’s event and the Indian team took the silver, propelled by the 16-year-old Asian Games gold medallist’s phenomenal individual performance. 
    • India also picked up a silver medal in the junior men’s trap team competition with Aman Ali Elahi, Vivaan Kapoor and Manavaditya Singh Rathore shooting a combined score of 348 to finish second behind Australia.
    • In the senior competition, Verma, Om Prakash Mitharwal, who claimed the 50m pistol gold, and Shahzar Rizvi pocketed the team silver with a combined score of 1738 in men’s 10m air pistol.
