  • 10th World Bamboo Day celebration held under the theme, ‘Bamboo: the future plants…a new hope’ in Manipur.
  • Railway track electrification till Guwahati will be completed by 2020 and electrification work of all non-electrified sections in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone will also be carried out in a phased manner. 
  •  At present the Indian Railways has about 13,675 km of non-electrified broad gauge railway tracks. Out of that, 2,536 km falls under NFR.  
  • The present sanctioned cost of the entire work is Rs 4,435 crore. 
  • In the NFR zone, work has been distributed to two agencies – Centre for Railway Electrification (CORE) and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) – for carrying out electrification.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina today jointly launched the construction of the India-Bangladesh Friendship Product Pipeline Project. 
  • The project also includes the Dhaka-Tongi-Joydebpur railway line. The 6-km Indian leg of the product pipeline project will be implemented by the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), while the remaining 124 km of the pipeline project will be implemented by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation. 
  • The project will replace the existing practice of sending diesel to Bangladesh by rail, covering a distance of 510 km. The capacity of the product pipeline will be one million metric tonnes per annum. 
  • The 130-km pipeline will connect Siliguri in West Bengal in India and Parbatipur in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. The estimated project cost will be Rs 346 crore and it will be completed in 30 months.
