  • The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India has recognised Darrang as the best performing district in the field of digital online services through Common Service Centres or CSCs. The Union Ministry awarded the district for achieving this remarkable feat from among nearly 750 districts across the country. Among the total of 750 districts in the country, Darrang VLE Society was awarded as the best performing CSC VLE Society for their record performance in the field of fertiliser sale to the farmers.
  • Vinesh Phogat today created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, brushing aside her rivals with remarkable ease in the 50kg category here.  The only woman wrestler to win two medals in back-to-back Asian Games. Vinesh had earlier won a bronze medal in the 48kg category at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Vinesh also won back-to-back gold medals in Glasgow and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games this year.  The men’s campaign finished with one gold medal from Bajrang Punia (65kg).

  • Saaz pani and judima have cleared a series of chemical tests, paving the way for their commercial brewing as the State’s first ‘heritage brews’. Judima is a traditional rice wine of the Dimasa tribe, while saaz pani is also a rice-based beverage popular among the Ahom and Tiwa communities. The traditionally prepared brew, mostly made from rice, is also known to have medicinal properties and once it hits the markets it is expected to give the foreign liquor and wine a tough competition. According to the new ‘Heritage Brew’ policy of the Excise department, the product should not contain more than 12 per cent alcohol volume by volume.
