  • Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the APDCL officials to work on a war-footing for achieving the ‘Saubhagya’ scheme’s target of providing power connection to 23 lakh families in rural areas of the State within December 31, 2018.
  • A recent Supreme Court order disallowing State Governments to whimsically appoint Director Generals of Police couldn’t have come at a better time for Meghalaya as there were several questionable appointments of DGPs over the years.The Apex Court in its order ruled that the State Governments will send a list of names for appointment of DGP to Union Public Service Commission three months before the incumbent DGP retires. A panel from UPSC would then shortlist three names from the list and return to the State Government. The State Government would have the liberty to choose one of the candidates “immediately” from the shortlisted candidates.
  • The 67th plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) will begin on Monday (9th June 2018) in which a number of key developmental issues of the region would be taken up for discussion.The two-day session will be chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at the State Convention Centre here. Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh and NEC members will participate in the conference. The yet-to-be launched Ayushman Bharat or the universal health insurance scheme would also be taken up for discussion and officials from the Union Ministry of Health would give their presentation on this important scheme and the way forward. Some of the other Central schemes that would be discussed are Poshan Abhiyan or the National Nutrition Mission and the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, an outreach programme to deliver Central welfare schemes to rural areasThere would also be discussions held on the progress made in the 14 ‘aspirational districts’ of the region out of the 106 in the country. The objective of the programme is to see that these 106 districts are at par with the best districts of the country in terms of health, education, water resource, education and other 49 progress indicators. Officials will also discuss continuation of NEC schemes till March, 2020 as approved by the Cabinet in March 2018. 
  • India’s premier gymnast Dipa Karmakar today clinched the gold medal in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey. The 24-year-old from Tripura, who had finished fourth in vault event in the 2016 Rio Olympics, scored 14.150 to win the top prize. She had topped the qualification with a score of 13.400. This is Dipa’s first medal in a World Challenge Cup.
