  • The first round of Mission Indradhanush (MI) under the extended Gram Swaraj Abhiyan will focus on the inter-State and inter-district border areas of Hailakandi district. Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Adil Khan, in his address, stressed on vaccinating children in the remote areas and those living close to the inter-State and inter-district border. “Focussed and systematic immunisation drive has to be carried out in the interior and border areas in a campaign mode where the aim is to cover all the children who have been left out or missed out of immunisation,” said Khan to the health officials and functionaries.
  • The Supreme Court today directed the CBI to file final reports in four cases of alleged extra-judicial killings and fake encounters by the Army, Assam Rifles and police in Manipur by July 27, saying violation of human rights cannot be tolerated. The apex court said what had happened in Manipur appeared to be “widespread” and the issue must be given “far more importance” as people have lost their lives. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and UU Lalit issued the direction after the CBI’s special investigating team (SIT) told the court that they have completed investigation in four cases and final reports were in the process of being finalised.
  • In perhaps the highest ever pay hike for tea garden workers, the State government has enhanced their daily wages by an interim amount of Rs 30 per day.Official sources said an official notification in this regard has been issued. The interim hike will have to be implemented with retrospective effect from March 1 this year.
  • The University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) today honoured media personalities from the region, recognising their contributions in the field of news media in giving legitimacy to people’s voice and augmenting the role of media as the ‘fourth estate’. The USTM Media Achiever Award-2018 went to eight senior journalists from the region – Sujit Chakraborty, IANS, Tripura; Satyanarayan Misra, Dainik Purvoday; Imtiaz Ahmed, The Telegraph, Guwahati; Monmoromi Mahanta, Prag Channel; Mridul Haloi, Dainik Janambhumi; Aafaque Hussain, The Shillong Times; Tinakali Sumi, Nagaland Post and Evanjoplin Dkhar, Meghalaya Guardian, Shillong.
