  • Dr Nazrana Ahmed was elected as the new Chairperson of Assam Tea Planters’ Association (ATPA). ATPA, established in 1935, is one of the oldest and largest tea planters’ body in the north-eastern region, having about 200 tea gardens as members. In the history of Assam tea industry. Dr Ahmed will be first lady planter to head a tea growers’ body. She as 35th Chairperson of the ATPA will assume charge at the 81st annual general meeting of the association scheduled to be held on July 13. Dr Ahmed is the ATPA Vice-Chairperson, a post which too was occupied by a woman planter for the first time ever.
  • Union government to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC) through the proposed Higher Education Commission of India (Repeal of University Grants Commission) Act, 2018.
  • Assam government has accorded sanction to release Rs 50 lakh to preserve Lakshminath Bezbaroa’s house at Odisha’s Sambalpur. It has also decided to purchase Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s Kolkata house at a cost of Rs 1.65 crore.
  • Assam girl Hima Das today completed double by clinching the gold medal in the 400m with a new meet record timing of 21.13 seconds in the 58th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship. She also qualified for the forthcoming Asian Games as the qualifying mark was 52.47.
