  • Sculptor Dr Janak Jhankar Narzary and dance exponent Guneswar Bhuyan have been chosen for the Bishnu Rabha Award, 2018.The award will be presented to the artistes at the central Rabha Divas function to be held at Sonapur Mini Stadium near on June 20. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will honour the duo.
  • 19 cancer care centres to be set up as part of the inclusive cancer care programme launched by Assam Cancer Care Foundation – a joint venture between Government of Assam and Tata Trusts.
  • According to 2014 data of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), the average hospitalization cost per person in the rural areas of Assam is the lowest in India at Rs 6,996 and 89.2% of rural inhabitants go to government hospitals. “Conversely, the average hospitalization cost per person in the urban areas of Assam is the highest in India at Rs 47,064. One of the main reasons for the high hospitalization expenditure in urban areas is that 48.5% of patients go to private hospitals. 
  • Taking note of large scale migration of students from the Northeast to other parts of the country for higher education, the Centre has decided to augment the infrastructure facilities of 700 colleges in the region. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the Northeast has been given priority under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) programme and at least 700 colleges in the region have been selected where the laboratories will be upgraded. A Central scheme launched in 2013, RUSA aims at providing strategic funding to eligible higher educational institutions in the states. Under the scheme, the Central funding is 90:10 for special category states and it is norm-based and outcome-dependent. The funding would flow from the Union ministry through the state governments to the state higher education councils before reaching the identified institutions, the minister said.
