  4. Railways has decided to reduce the official sleeping hours in its trains by an hour. According to a circular issued by the Railway Board on August 31, the passengers allotted to the lower berths in the reserved coaches can only sleep between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and must allow those allotted middle or upper berths to sit there for the rest of the time. Earlier, the existing permissible time for sleeping in reserved coaches was between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • The circular also clarified that a person booked on side upper berth will not have any claim of seat on the lower berth between 10 p.m. hours and 6 a.m.

  1. Jharkhand Government under the leadership of its Chief Minister Raghubar Das, contributed Rs 5 crore to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
  2. The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has constituted Expert Task Force to provide major thrust to job creation by enhancing India’s exports. It will be headed by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar. The task force will give sector-specific recommendations in key employment sectors for policy interventions and suggest measures to enhance trade in services with high employment potential.
  3. Govt of Assam signed an MoU with Google for effective utilization of technology for overall uplift of the state
  4. Utpal Chakrabarti has been promoted as the new Executive Director (ED) of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Salakati, Kokrajhar, NTPC sources said on Thursday.Earlier, he headed the Bongaigaon project as the Group General Manager. Chakrabarti joined the NTPC in 1981 as an executive trainee. 
  • He has worked in various NTPC projects like Farakka Super Thermal Power Station, Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station, Western Region-I HQ, Talcher Super Thermal Power Station and Bongaigaon Thermal Power Project, Salakati in Kokrajhar. 
  • He joined the NTPC, Bongaigaon in 2010 as AGM (Project) and got promoted as the Head of the Project in 2014. During his tenure, Chakrabarti successfully commissioned Unit 1 of the NTPC, Bongaigaon.

She will take on sixth seed Chen Su Yu of Chinese Taipei.
  5. Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also entered the pre-quarterfinals in women’s singles with a 21-14 21-13 win over Lianne Tan of Belgium. However, Tanvi Lad lost to Sarita Suwannakitborihan of Thailand 17-21 19-21 in the women’s singles.
  6. In men’s singles, Lakshya Sen reached pre-quarterfinals with a 21-17 21-10 win over compatriot Abhishek Yelegar. The Bhaben Baruah Award for 2017 was conferred on eminent playwright and theatre director Hemanta Dutta in a function held at Nalbari Natyamandir on Sunday evening.The award, instituted by the Nalbari district committee of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) in 2009, is given to a known theatre personality for his contributions in the field. The award consists of a cash prize, a citation, sarai, phulam jaapi, seleng sador, among others.

  3.  ‘Apon Ghar’ (housing loan) scheme and ‘Bidyalaxmi’ (higher education loan) scheme by SBI is meant for permanent employees of the Government of Assam. The meeting was addressed by PVSLN Murty, Chief General Manager, SBI NE Circle and Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad president Basab Chandra Kalita and general secretary Nagen Das. Om Prakash Mishra, General Manager, SBI NE Circle and other senior office-bearers of the Karmachari Parishad and bank officials were present at the meeting.

The Assam Football Association (AFA) will introduce computerised on-line registration system of the players from this year.Informing this in a release, the AFA secretary Ankur Dutta said that the footballers who represented their districts or clubs have to apply to the AFA by submitting documents like-birth certificate, name of the district/club/college/school among others.
  5. The panel of the newly set up North East Taekwondo Union was selected in a meeting held at the Circuit House here on September 2 under the aegis of the All Assam Taekwondo Association.Representatives from States like – Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya were present in the meeting where discussions took place on the game and the meeting also resolved to work for the betterment of the taekwondo players of this region
  6. The All Assam Armwrestling Association today announced the 63-member Assam team for the 36th National Armwrestling Championship which is scheduled to be held at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium here from September 8 to 10

President Ramnath Kovind will present the award at New Delhi on the occasion of Teacher’s Day tomorrow.Golaplata Goswami, who started her career as a teacher at Sonarishal LP School in Kamrup district and she later joined as a teacher at Sarufulchaki Lower Primary School in 1986. She took charge as headmistress there in 1996. She also got Baksa district Teacher’s Award in 2007 and also the State Teacher’s Award in 2009.
  8. Manipur filmmaker Oinam Doren’s film My name is Eeooow has won an international award at the recently concluded 23 Film Festival della Lessinia held in Bosco Chiesanuova in Italy from August 19-27.
The film won the prize in the category of ‘best film by a young director’. Piero Piazzola and Mario Pigozzi are founders of the 23-year-old festival. The film is produced by CCRT. The film shot in Kongthong village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills follows the family of two married sisters – Shidiap Khongsit and Shithoh Khongsit – whose children have to stay in Shillong for higher studies.
The film had already won the ‘Intangible culture prize’ in the UK in April this year. In October, the film will be screened in Estonian National Museum in Tartu, Estonia and Rajasthan International folk music festival, Jodhpur.

                  Balwant Singh’s second half double strike helped India beat Macau 2-0 in a group league encounter of the Asian Cup qualifying round, taking their unbeaten run in international matches to 11.

Shahil Dey who represented India in the U-10 category in World Cadet Chess Championship held at Brazil from August 22 got the 13th position in final ranking with 6 wins and 2 draws. He started the tournament against the 16th seeded player based on his international rating. Shahil got 7 points out of total 11 rounds. Shahil will next represent Assam in the National U-11 Chess Tournament to be held at Maharashtra from November 22 to 30.

The first edition of the All Assam Shotokan Karate Championship, organised by the Shotokan Karate Do Promotion Council of Assam concluded last evening at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium . Taksheel Majumdar, Advik Majumdar, Kasturika Narzary (Sub Junior) and Dhananjay Boro (Cadet) of Guwahati won two gold medals each in their age categories in both Kata and Kumite events.
                7. The Science and Engineering Research Board of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has announced the award of its Overseas Post Doctoral Fellowship for the year 2016-2017.The candidates were selected on the basis of their academic credentials, merit of the proposed research work and the credentials of the institutes abroad where they are proposing to carry out their post doctoral research.
                8. Dr Rumajyoti Hazarika of the Centre for Atmospheric Studies and Dr Tridip Ranjan Chetia of the Department of Chemistry of Dibrugarh University have been awarded the Overseas Post Doctoral Fellowship. They will be carrying out their research in the University of Edinburgh and the University of Newcastle, UK respectively.
                9. The 91st birth anniversary of legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika will be celebrated by the AASU on September 8 on the bank of Dighalipukhuri. Tributes will be paid to the maestro during the programme ‘Uddipana’, which will showcase performances by students of various colleges and universities. Academic Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury will also recite luitot snan, the sequel to his famous elegy on Dr Hazarika – Eta Gaan Sesh Hol – at 10 am
                10. The Assam Government is likely to consider withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) provided the Centre agrees to deploy additional central paramilitary forces or allow the State to raise additional India Reserve Battalions to fill up the void to be created following the withdrawal of the Army from counter-insurgency operations.
                11. 417-year-old Royal Durga Puja of the erstwhile Zamindary Estate of Gauripur is scheduled to be held from September 19, the date on which Mahalaya falls this year.Brisk preparations are on for the same at the temple located in the eastern part of the historic Mahamaya playground.
